Tooth-Colored Fillings

Dr. Bandy may recommend a filling to restore a tooth with a small cavity. The good news is that we offer tooth-colored fillings that match the color of your natural enamel. That way, no one will even be able to tell you had a filling. Instead, you’ll be able to enjoy a healthier, more attractive smile.

Here’s what else you need to know about getting tooth-colored fillings.

Fillings vs. Crowns

A dental crown is different from a filling because it covers the entire visible portion of your tooth above the gum line. For this reason, Dr. Bandy will need to prepare a tooth so it’s ready to receive a dental crown. This involves filing down and shaping the enamel to create space for the crown to sit on top of the tooth.

With dental fillings, we only have to remove the part of the tooth that’s damaged or decayed. This makes the procedure less invasive. But it also means that fillings are only suitable for small cavities. Once the cavity grows, you’ll need more intensive treatment to save the tooth.

What to Expect

It’s of utmost importance that you call our Holly dental practice right away if you’re experiencing a toothache. This allows us to diagnose and treat the source of your pain as soon as possible.

Dr. Bandy will examine your teeth, gums, and other oral structures. We’ll also take X-rays to see if there’s any issues not visible to the naked eye. For example, sometimes cavities will form between teeth.

If Dr. Bandy determines that you need a filling, he’ll inject a local anesthetic into the soft tissue by your tooth. Once you’re numb and comfortable, Dr. Bandy will remove the decayed portion of your tooth. Then, he’ll use composite resin to build up your tooth and return it to its natural strength and appearance.

Your mouth will be numb for a few hours after your appointment, so be mindful of your teeth. Don’t eat a big meal immediately after your appointment and accidentally bite the inside of your cheek. Take it easy until the numbness subsides.
