Dental implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss. Unlike dentures that slip, dental implants are embedded in the jawbone for the ultimate stability while you eat, speak, and laugh. Dental implants also look and feel like natural teeth so you can smile with confidence.
You may be a candidate for dental implants if you have sufficient bone density in your jaw. Otherwise, Dr. Bandy may recommend getting a bone graft or suggest a different way to replace your missing tooth. It’s also preferred that you be a non-smoker since smoking inhibits your body’s natural healing ability after surgery.
A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root that’s made out of a titanium alloy. During the procedure, Dr. Bandy makes a small incision in the gum, drills a hole into the jawbone, and places the titanium rod. He’ll then place a temporary abutment and dental crown over the implant so you don’t have to leave our office toothless.
Over the course of several months, the implant will fuse to your jawbone during a process called osseointegration. During this time, you’ll have several followup appointments with our office so Dr. Bandy can monitor your healing.
Once the implant has fully fused to your jawbone, Dr. Bandy will replace the temporary abutment and dental crown with the permanent ones. The result is a healthy, attractive smile that will last for decades as long as you practice good oral hygiene.
